A Simple Guide to Calculating Fabric Yardage:

When you’re planning to sew your own drapery panels, one of the first questions that comes up is: “How much fabric do I need?” Whether you’re a DIY enthusiast or working with a custom drapery workroom, calculating your fabric yardage accurately will help you save time, avoid waste, and ensure your panels look polished and professional.
In this post, we’ll walk you through how to figure yardage for basic drapery panels — including allowances for hems, rod pockets, and fabric repeats. ✂️ Step 1: Determine Your Cut Length Your cut length is the total length of fabric you’ll cut for each panel. It includes the finished panel length plus extra inches for hems and rod pockets (or header tape, if you’re using one). Here’s the formula: Cut Length = Finished Length + Hem Allowance + Rod Pocket Allowance Note: Our workroom adds 16 inches to the finished length to allow for hems and rod pockets. So, if your finished panel length is 84 inches, your cut length will be: 84" + 16" = 100"
πŸͺΆ Step 2: Account for the Number of Panels Once you know your cut length, multiply it by the number of panels you’re making. For example: 2 panels → 100" × 2 = 200" total fabric 3 panels → 100" × 3 = 300" total fabric 4 panels → 100" × 4 = 400" total fabric Now, divide the total inches by 36 to convert to yards. Example (No Fabric Repeat): 2 panels → 200" ÷ 36 = 5.625 yards (round up to 6 yards) 3 panels → 300" ÷ 36 = 8.33 yards (round up to 9 yards) 4 panels → 400" ÷ 36 = 11.125 yards (round up to 12 yards) It’s always a good idea to round up and allow extra fabric for pattern alignment, trimming, or any miscuts.
🧡 Step 3: Add Fabric for Pattern Repeats If your chosen fabric has a pattern repeat, you’ll need to add extra inches so the design aligns perfectly across all panels. A repeat is the distance from one point in a pattern to the next time that same design appears vertically. Common repeats range from 12" to 27", depending on the fabric. To calculate yardage with a repeat, the first panel will use the regular cut length. Then, for each additional panel, add the number of inches in the repeat. Example: Fabric with a 27" Repeat Finished length: 84" Workroom allowance: 16" Repeat: 27" Calculations: 1st panel → 84" + 16" = 100" 2nd & additional panels → 84" + 16" + 27" = 127" Now multiply: 2 panels → 100" + 127" = 227" total = 6.3 yards (round to 7 yards) 3 panels → 100" + (127" × 2) = 354" total = 9.83 yards (round to 10 yards) 4 panels → 100" + (127" × 3) = 481" total = 13.36 yards (round to 14 yards)
πŸͺ‘ Step 4: Always Round Up for Safety Fabric shrinkage, design matching, or cutting adjustments can easily consume extra inches. To stay safe, always round up to the next full yard. It’s better to have a little extra fabric than to fall short mid-project. πŸͺ„ Quick Reference Chart Panels Fabric Type Cut Length Each Total Inches Yards Needed (Safe) 2 No Repeat 100" 200" 6 yards 3 No Repeat 100" 300" 9 yards 4 No Repeat 100" 400" 12 yards 2 27" Repeat 100" + 127" 227" 7 yards 3 27" Repeat 100" + (127"×2) 354" 10 yards 4 27" Repeat 100" + (127"×3) 481" 14 yards
🏑 Final Tips from Beautiful Windows Elgin If your fabric has both vertical and horizontal repeats, always plan for the vertical repeat first when determining yardage. For extra fullness or pleated drapery styles, you may need 1.5x to 2.5x the window width per panel. When in doubt, our team can help you calculate the exact yardage for your project — whether it’s a simple rod-pocket panel or custom pinch-pleated drapery. ✨ Bring Your Vision to Life At Beautiful Windows Elgin, we help homeowners and designers create elegant, made-to-measure drapery that fits every space perfectly. The Power of Unplugging: Reclaiming Joy Through Movement, Mindfulness and Intentional Living In a world that hums with notifications, algorithms, and endless scrolls, the simple act of unplugging has become a radical form of self-care. It’s not just about stepping away from screens—it’s about stepping back into yourself. Whether you're a designer, a maker, or a dreamer, the digital noise can drown out your inner rhythm. But when you choose to disconnect, even briefly, you create space for something far more nourishing: movement, mindfulness, and the quiet joy of intentional living. Mindfulness: The Art of Being Present Unplugging invites you to slow down and notice the beauty in the moment. The texture of fabric between your fingers. The way morning light dances across your windows. The sound of your breath as it deepens. Mindfulness isn’t reserved for meditation mats—it’s woven into everyday rituals. Folding linens. Sketching a new design. Sipping tea without distraction. These small acts become sacred when you’re fully present. Studies show that digital detoxes reduce anxiety, improve emotional regulation, and enhance overall well-being2. When you unplug, your nervous system gets a chance to reset. You stop reacting and start responding—with grace, clarity, and intention. Movement: Reconnecting with the Body Screens keep us still. But the body craves motion—gentle stretches, long walks, spontaneous dancing in the kitchen. Movement is medicine, and when you unplug, you remember how good it feels to move freely. Physical activity boosts serotonin, improves sleep, and enhances creativity3. It’s not about rigid workouts—it’s about joyful motion. A walk through your neighborhood. Rearranging your showroom. Rolling out fabric with purpose and ease. Movement reminds you that you’re alive—not just online. Creativity: Space to Imagine When the noise fades, inspiration flows. Unplugging clears mental clutter and makes room for new ideas. Whether you're curating textiles or crafting a campaign, creativity thrives in quiet. Intentional living means choosing what you consume, how you spend your time, and what you create. It’s about aligning your outer world with your inner values. For small business owners like you, Marrion, it’s the heartbeat of your brand. Unplugging isn’t an escape—it’s a return. To your senses. To your story. To the soulful spark that started it all. Self-Care: A Lifestyle, Not a Luxury Self-care isn’t just bubble baths and spa days—it’s boundaries, breath, and being kind to yourself. It’s choosing rest over hustle. Presence over performance. Connection over comparison. By unplugging, you reclaim your time and energy. You become the curator of your own experience. And in doing so, you model a lifestyle of grace, intention, and authenticity—for your customers, your community, and yourself. Final Thread Unplugging is a quiet revolution. It’s a way to live with more heart, more movement, and more meaning. Whether you’re styling a room or stitching a story, the most beautiful creations come from a place of presence. So pause. Breathe. Move. Create. And let your life—and your brand—reflect the elegance of intentional living.

Curtains – The “ins and outs”

Curtains – The “ins and outs” – How to Select the Height or Length of Curtains There are only a few simple rules to follow for choosing curtain height or length The length or height of the hung curtain should be to the floor or the windowsill. Anything in between looks rather odd. There is a trend today of puddling curtains, this is where they are made longer than the height required and “puddle” on the floor, this requires a skill in fabric selection, so that they sit well. It is used commonly in living rooms and bedrooms. With puddled curtains on a hand drawn track, make sure that the width of the curtain is not excessive as they become heavy and difficult to draw back. They are also prone to picking up all the fluff from your floor, so a little bit more attention is required to keeping them looking smart.

Before Measuring

Before measuring, consider whether you want an inside or outside mounted window treatment. If inside, you’ll need to make sure your window is square by measuring horizontally at the top, center and bottom, vertically along both sides and center, and diagonally. Also measure the frame depth and take into account any window hardware that might obstruct the window treatment.
Want to ensure a perfect fit? Get started with a local expert. A helpful hint: Ask your local expert to measure all your windows, so the measurements are on hand for future projects. The Top Of The Curtain

The top of the curtain (the heading), for all curtains can be at ceiling height, above or at the top of the window frame or flush with the window reveal. It all depends on the space that you have. Do keep your choice constant in your home as it can look very odd if some curtan heads are fixed at different heights to others, especially when you can view through from room to room or worse, in the same room. The finished length of ceiling to floor curtains should leave a 10mm gap, so that they don’t catch the floor and are easy to draw back, the gap for finishing at a windowsill only requires 5mm. For safety reasons, never cover radiator heaters with curtains, look for another solution, either stop the curtains short of the heaters or use a blind as an alternative style of window treatment.

So, consulting a professional on “how to choose curtains for your home” can help and also save you valuable time and money. We list some valuable points that you must look for while choosing the right curtains Here are seven Tips and How to Pick Curtains for Your Home Find out if you actually want a curtain, drapes, valance, swags or blackout curtain. Time to pick out the right fabric What type of curtains color should you choose? Which style will be better? Solid or Print What is the ideal length of curtains? What is the ideal width of curtains? are all question to be answered before you can make a purchase. So the first and most important step that will narrow down your research is that you know what we are looking at in the curtain or drape. Sometimes, people need curtains, but they buy drapes by mistake. Therefore, the differences in this concern should be known first. Curtains are used to protect your privacy and also let in a little sunlight when hanging down windows or doors. They are made of light fabric and are usually shorter in length than curtains. Drapes Drapes also protect privacy but are used more for sunlight blackout, noise reduction, and insulation due to their long length and dense fabric. Generally, they are taller and heavier than curtains, leaving less space for light and air. I hope the difference is clear in your mind and helps in "how to choose curtains for your home". Time to Pick Out the Right Fabric When it comes to material, it plays an important role in the choice because each fabric has a different design, weight and maintenance process. Some are heavy, some are light, and some require dry cleaning while others require washing. But some of the things you look for a lot in clothes are given below: (I) How much sunlight do you want to get in? (II) Does the fabric design match the design of the room or not? Traditional homes required heavy-weight fabrics. Cotton The most used and casual fabric in the curtain is cotton. It's simple, lightweight, easy to maintain and cheaper in price compared to other materials. Cotton fabrics provide more light without compromising privacy, and less heat enters. Caring Process: - Do Dry clean when it is necessary; otherwise, a vacuum or brush can be used to remove dust. Linen Linen comes with a more beautiful design and color shade, and its textured style diffuses light efficiently. Caring Process: - Use a vacuum or brush to clean the curtain; it could be dry-cleaned if needed. After that, it was wrinkled much highlighted then do iron at low speed. Velvet Velvet fabric curtains usually have beautiful and attractive designs. They are mainly used to block incoming light as they are heavy and opaque. Maintenance process: - The only way to keep velvet curtains clean when they get dirty is to wash them. Always use lukewarm water for cleaning and use a good quality cleaning agent instead of cheap water. The tips don't end here. More information on "How to choose curtains for home" is given below. What kind of curtain color should you choose? Window or door curtains should be similar in color to the walls and other furnishings but not too similar. The color of the curtains will blend, and to prevent it from mixing, you need to get a slightly different shade or contrast. Which style would be better? Solid or print Two popular patterns in curtains are solids and prints. If you want to get things in velvet or linen, solid patterns are better because things look beautiful in solids. If you want your curtains to stand out in the room, you should buy printed ones, but in this case cotton is better. What is the ideal length of the curtains? An ideal length is when the curtain touches the floor, but if you want a more royal look, you can extend it by a few inches. If you have children, curtains should be a few inches from the floor. Window blinds vary as height or floor length work well. In this scenario, your choice matters. What is the ideal width of the curtains? Most of the time when you go to buy curtains, you only choose the length because the width is standard. But some stores also give you the option to choose the width. In terms of customization, you can choose every aspect related to length, width, color and fabric. Before ordering, measure any curtain width each time you measure the length to get the right size. For this, you can use the same tool that you would use for the length. An easy way to determine the width is to measure the width with a measuring tool and add 6 inches to each side. I hope your problem is solved. If not, you can read the frequently asked questions below. Frequently Asked Questions Should I choose custom curtains or ready-made? Custom-made always has the upper hand as spending some extra money gives you the option to choose your own style. But if you don't want to pay extra, don't worry. Ready-made ones also work well as they are available in the market after research. Is using curtains at home old-fashioned? I believe the answer is no because curtains will be in fashion or used until the house has windows and doors. And a house without windows or doors is impossible so don't worry and choose the right curtains. What is a good quality curtain worth to you? It can cost you around $100 to $500 depending on your choice of curtains, style, design, color, pattern, and fabric. Do you provide any consultation for curtain selection? Yes, we do a 1-hour live session, which will cost you $75, but what you'll get in this session is valuable help in identifying the right window or door treatment design for your home. As far as I'm concerned, it's worth spending a few bucks on a consultation.

Before jumping into how to choose drapey, you should know whether your window actually needs curtains, drapes, shades, or blinds. For this, you should know well how these things honestly differ from each other. Other, thing you need to know is the best bedroom curtain, living rooms, cleaning curtains, curtain color and if you should use lined or unlined curtains. Curtain: Simply a piece of cloth or other material that helps block incoming dust, wind, and light. They are made from a light fabric and are usually cut to fit the window. Drapes: Drapes also hang from the front panels of the window but are made of slightly thicker fabric, are usually longer than the curtain, and have a slight dip to the floor. Shade: A shade is straightforward to block or diffuse incoming light. A cloth or plastic roll hung over the upper window and can be pulled down when needed. Sometimes more expensive than blind. Blind: Performs the same privacy function as a shade but hangs like a curtain or drape, usually less expensive Figure out the right length and how to hang curtains. Photo by ANTONI SHKRABA on Pexels #1 Drapery Fabric, Home Decor Window Openings Upgrading curtain and getting the right length can be confusing for beginners. Remember, if it's too long, it will look like a mess. On the other hand, if it is too small and on top of the casement windows, it will blow away in the wind and can knock over nearby objects such as dishes or lamps. The ceiling height will be better for either curtains or blinds, but you can adjust the size just above the starting point of the windows for correct width of window. #2 Figure out the correct window treatment openings If you go with ready-made curtains, you will have common standard length options such as 63 inches (160 cm), 84 inches (213 cm), 96 inches (244 cm), 108 inches (274 cm). . 120 inches (305 cm). When you go with custom-made, there are many options in every aspect, like customization, length, width, color, style, and design, but it will be expensive. Now it depends on you what you actually want Below are the options for the style of hitting the curtain floor: Hover: If you are someone who likes to open and close curtains quickly. You can go with the hover ending. Hover means the curtain will end just above the floor. This will give your room a cleaner look. Break: If you want to know the actual curtain end recommended by professionals or designers, this is the break style. Instead of hovering this way, you're an inch long when it hits the ground. Puddle: You can go with a puddle-style finish for a more glamorous, unusual, classy, luxurious, and attractive look. In this style, you need to add another 6 inches of length to the curtain or drape it touching the ground and curtain rod. # 3Figure out the correct width and height of window curtains or drapes. If you are estimating the width of the window, don't worry, they are usually standard sizes, and ready-made options can be enough. Otherwise, you can find custom options when the window width is for double hung windows. This will require you to do some calculations. An easy way to determine the width is to measure the width with a measurement instrument and add 6 inches on each side. Off-the-shelf curtains can extend up to 48 inches because it narrows when pleated. #4: Fabric Choice Purpose can be an essential point in choosing a curtain or drape fabric. You first need to know for what purpose you are actually looking for curtains. Do you want natural light without dust? Do you want privacy in your room? Once you've found the goal, you can narrow your choices to the available clothes. Velvet may be the first choice of designers for privacy and blackout features. Because it naturally blacks out the room completely. For natural light, you can go with sheer curtains (linen, cotton) that diffuse the light and allow only soft light to create a calming atmosphere in the room. #5: Color A foolproof way to choose a wall color to coordinate the color of the drape with the rest of the furniture in the room. For a more finished look, a color that complements or matches the walls is a better choice. Otherwise, you can go with contrast options. Then your curtains will draw more attention to one part of the room. #6: Which style? Printed or solid I want to know which style best suits your room, solid or print. For this purpose, I will soon introduce you to a handy tip. Take a thorough look at your space and see if everything else, such as the walls, furniture, or decor, complements the look. Then you should use a printed style as the contrasting colors attract attention. But if the opposite is the case and all the things in the room, like walls, furniture, or decorations, are colored, then you have to choose a solid style. #7: Lined or unlined? If you are stuck in choosing lined or unlined curtains, let me tell you in simple words. Lined curtains are a better choice for privacy due to their extra thickness and double layer. The characteristic of add-ons is that they are long-lasting, while inline ones behave oppositely. #8: Cleaning habits You might feel strange after reading this point and start thinking about whether there might be a connection between cleaning habits and curtains, hand wash, dry cleaning or washing machine. Then read the following instructions, and you will be amazed. Sheer curtains can help diffuse light and create a more calming atmosphere in a room. Go with sheer curtains (linen, cotton) to diffuse light and create a calming atmosphere with only soft illumination. Color is a sure way. To create this style of curtain, add 6 more inches to the length of the curtain, or drape it so it touches the ground and the curtain rod.
